Hey, I am back… I took some time out that I needed. A little recharging, some time away from the computer, which I think everyone needs from time to time. My boys were on vacation last week so I did not want to be unavailable..
I have been having fun with the new camera- here is a shot at my sons’ basketball game. He is the one at the far left .

Also, I went to a seminar – Mike Colon and Bob Davis- in Hartford. That was great! Lot’s of good ideas and tips to inspire and challenge. A whole bunch of my fellow photog friends were out in full force. Glad I did not miss it! Sorry for those who did…..I learned a bunch about white balance, trying to get it right in the camera.. these lights in the gym were mixed and difficult – I’ll get it right with practice!! Learn to read histograms!! I thought I did, but man, there is always more to learn. Never a moment to be bored! This was shot at ISO 2000!! What do you think?!!?

Hey am I excited to get a new camera! I just got the Nikon D300 and so far it feels and performs wonderfully! It is really going to make those low light situations much easier and more creative!!
I’m just playing with it today, so as soon as I learn all it’s new tricks and finish reading the huge manual, I’ll post some images.
Hope you all are enjoying this rainy holiday – good to curl up with a good camera manual, a hot cup of tea w/ honey and while away the hours! Have fun! I know I will!!

Snow always makes the landscape look more interesting
in winter.
This was taken 2 days ago when the weather changed.
Fog after a snow is always a favorite of mine.

Just playing with the sun …

and garbage is always a plus!

I attended the CPPA (Connecticut Professional Photographers Association)
conference this past weekend in Cromwell, CT.
It was a great time and I was especially inspired by all the
wonderful discussions, and it is always nice meeting other local photographers.

Well, I am trying to take time for myself in this “off season” season! I went out to Peppercorns Grill last night with my girlfriends Diane and Betsy and ate some really great Italian food.
Then we proceeded across the road to the Charter Oak Cultural Center where my friend Helene Kvale, Actor, Director, and Professor of Acting in the UConn Drama Dept., put on a production of the Vagina Diaries. What a great show – it is playing there again tonight so don’t miss it! All the proceeds go directly to great organizations to help in the fight against and awareness of abuse and violence against women.
I am so sorry that I neglected to bring my camera! That happens when I take time off… oh it annoys me, too! Well, it was a grand evening and everyone looked beautiful and there were many smiles, cheers, laughter and love being shared before, during and after! You will just have to believe me!
Well, here are two of my favorite people..
These are my two sons. Aren’t they totally awesome?
They are taller than me, smarter and …….humm……ok, I’ll stop.
They play in a metal band. I don’t like metal, however,
when they unplug and play the guitar parts alone it sounds
like classical music. Drums and guitar are their instruments.
One of the most important rules in my house is – if I have a client meeting,
there can be no band practice. They respect that.
So, don’t worry, when you come to see me, you won’t have to wear earplugs!

I worked at my local polling place for 15 hours yesterday! Wow! I met and worked with some really awesome people – other local citizens trying to do what ever they can for the country.
I was inspired. What a great place, America.
I don’t know about you, but after a few days of rain and fog here in Connecticut I am ready for some sun. I don’t mind the snow – but grey and dark – I can only take so much.
Maybe this will brighten things up…

NYC Flower shop- from my last visit to the city.
I can’t wait to go back to New York this spring with my new clients Jen and Drew!
Their getting married in August, but they want to do their engagement session in the city!
I am really looking forward to it.
Happy Chinese New Year! Gung Hey Fa Choi? (Spelling? sorry…) Anybody speak chinese out there?

My Dog, Roxy and I took a hike today. We have a special place we like to go. Found it this fall, it is very near my house. My husband and kids don’t even know about it. Roxy loves to run off leash and I like exploring there. Previously, we had found a garden at the back of a large field. It is very well fenced for keeping the deer out and has cold boxes with lettuce sprouting! Hummm…..
Well, today we noticed a footpath at the back of the garden leading out into the woods. We followed it over the wall and down the hill to a rushing stream! Oddly, there were buckets neatly laid on the opposite side. Interesting find.
Tomorrow is Super Tuesday and Fat Tuesday! So wear your Mardi Gras beads to the polls
and VOTE!
I need to go to bed early because I have volunteered to work at the polls as a registrar.
Just trying to be involved and encourage people to take action in some way to make this country a better place for everyone.
Good night!

From where I’m sitting today it looks like a fairly typical winter day in Connecticut – of the grey variety. It is raining now, it was sleeting earlier and I expect a little snow later if the temperature drops after dark.
This is the slow time of year for Wedding Photographers so I am catching my breath, enjoying some free weekends with my family and finally starting to blog!
So, what can I tell you ..hummm….?
I am a professional wedding and portrait photographer living in the wilds of Connecticut (there aren’t too many wild places left here, but we do have wild turkeys, coyote dogs, fox, bobcat, all sorts of birds, rabbits, chipmunks and squirrels!). I made the transition from classical pianist and teacher to professional photographer. Well, actually I was always a photographer, I just never got serious about it until after my two boys were born and I found myself playing less piano and more with legos and photographing every new thing that they did! My photography life before kids consisted of shooting nature and architecture and making sure no humans were ever found in any of my photos! Ha! Now, this is my main focus – people!
How did I settle in Connecticut?
I actually grew up in the little town of Old Greenwich, Connecticut where I loved to photograph nature and sunsets at Greenwich Point Park on the Long Island Sound. It is close to New York City where my Dad was a professional trumpet player. After graduate school at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, I followed my husband Peter around the country from Santa Barbara, CA to Baton Rouge, LA until he found a tenure track position and the job of his dreams at the University of Connecticut. Go Huskies!! So I have actually come full circle and found a new part of the state that I have grown to love.
After a couple of years figuring out what I was going to do in this little college town in the Quiet Corner, I decided to go in another direction. I picked up the camera seriously and enrolled myself in the art department at UConn and here I am. Actually, it wasn’t that easy, and it took many years to get to where I am right now, but I am happy to be doing what I am doing. (I won’t go into all the gory details)
I never thought I would become a wedding photographer. I grew up thinking wedding photography was dull and boring. I did not like the photos they took at my wedding. Okay, they were alright, but, I figured that if that was what wedding photography looked like, I did not want any part of it! Portraits, fashion and sports photography seemed much more interesting to me. Little did I know, weddings are one big family portrait shoot combined with fashion and editorial – and it requires the speed and precision of sports photography. It’s definitely not boring!
I meet so many truly incredible people who invite me into their lives for one of their biggest moments – their wedding day. Some families invite me in just to keep a record of their growing families from year to year. I hope they call me when the kids get married!
So, this is just a little about who I am.
Why am I writing a blog?
Well, I have been thinking about it for a year! Friends and colleagues wonder why I don’t blog. To blog or not to blog – that has been the question.
I think it will be great to post new images and slide shows for my brides and grooms on this blog, or for whoever wants to peek in and see what I am up to.
If you are interested, you can visit my website: www.kimbova.com.
So, this is my first post! Thanks for being here.
